With expensive parking rates and congested streets, New Yorkers rely on car and limousine services, which, despite what you may think, are not prohibitively expensive. In fact, some companies' fares are comparable to a taxi ride, but featuring more luxurious service. You have a choice ranging from luxury sedans and limousines to older late-model American cars, vans and station wagons. By booking a reservation in advance, you ensure the driver will meet you where you want, and you need not wait in a long line at the airport or search the streets late at night for a taxicab.

When reserving a car, ask about what sort of cars are available. If you are flying into a New York airport, you will need to give your airline, airport and flight arrival time. You might also need to give your credit card information to secure the reservation. Most car services will dispatch the driver to meet you at the baggage claim, but some require you to phone the car service company again upon your arrival at the airport. Usually the driver will carry a sign with your name on it.

Although it is sometimes possible to hail a sedan on the street, it is not recommended as you will need to negotiate the rate. Should you choose to do so anyway, always negotiate the rate in advance; if you are not satisfied with the offer, don't ride with the driver. If you do not negotiate in advance, you'll probably have to pay what the driver demands, and late at night these demands can be unreasonable. The negotiated rate does not include tip.

Finally, note that to and from the airports, fixed car-service rates are generally available. There should be no per-person or baggage surcharge, but do ask. Tolls and tip are extra.
