Bronx Museum of the Arts

Bronx Museum of the Arts The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a fine art museum founded in 1971 in The Bronx, New York City, USA. It presents exhibitions featuring works by culturally diverse and under-recognized artists on themes of special interest to the Bronx community. The museum grew from an uncertain beginning and extensive turnover to a computer headquarters in the late 1980s and a state of the art exhibition space in 2006 that serves as an example to other neighborhood based institutions due in part to increased funding for the arts in the outer boroughs of New York City.

The museum, housed in a former synagogue on the Grand Concourse is a crucial part of the social history of the Bronx and the 2006 expansion, referred to by some as an accordion, which aligns the museum with the look of its Concourse location, is credited with helping to bridge the gap between art and the audience, which has changed significantly during its existence. The museum is taking advantage of its new space and the changing audience and artist demographics to establish partnerships with other borough institutions to improve the overall image of the Bronx.

Guided by the Museum's mission--to serve the ethnically-diverse populations of the Bronx and to stimulate community participation primarily through the visual arts--the permanent collection reflects the Museum's surrounding communities and constituents, comprised primarily of African American and Latino populations, as well as a growing number of Asian-American communities in the metropolitan area.
